You’ve been on Twitter for a while, and you’ve heard it’s polite to follow the people who follow you. So you do. You gain a pretty decent following yourself, but the more people you follow the harder it is for you to keep up with your timeline. Soon, it gets to the point where you have so many people you’re following because you’ve gained such a following that all you’re doing is tweeting AT people instead of with people. With Twitter Lists you can reduce the craziness that is your timeline and find a way to follow-back without being overwhelmed.
Step One: TweetDeck/Hootsuite
The first thing you’re going to want to do is sign up for TweetDeck or Hootsuite. For the purposes of this post, we’re going to use TweetDeck. All the steps are pretty much the same, so even if you decide to go with Hootsuite instead, you will be able to follow along fairly easily.
Once you’ve signed up for an account, set TweetDeck aside. We’ll be coming back to it, but we have work to do on Twitter before we go any further. Just be sure to have your account set up so you don’t have to worry about it later.
Step Two: Twitter Lists
A while back, Twitter came out with the idea to create lists. This is where we want to go.
First, go to the “Me” button. Once you’re on your profile, the next step is to click the “Lists” button.
From there, it gets easy. Click the “Create List” button.
The lists can be for anything. Here’s an example of some of mine:
I have a plethora of interests and so I categorize the people I follow into those lists. You can also subscribe to lists created by other Twitter users. The only time others can’t see your one is if you set it to private. When you go to create a list, you should see this:
Create the list name, select “Public” or “Private,” and save.
Step Three: Add Tweeps
The next part will be the most time-consuming, so you’ll probably want to set back a long block of time to do this.
Go to your “Following” page. Next to all the blue buttons, you’ll see an icon exactly like the one next to the “Me” button:
When you click on it, it gives you options, including “Add or remove from lists…” Click on it and all the lists you’ve created will pop up.
This is the time-consuming part. Go through all the people you’re following and add them to the lists.
Step Four: Using the Lists
Once you’ve added all the people you follow to lists, go to TweetDeck (or Hootsuite) and click the “Add Column” button.
A box will pop up with options to choose from, including Lists.
When you click on it, all of your lists will pop up and you can choose which ones you want to add.
This is an easy way to keep track of all the people you follow, including the people you converse with regularly.
